The Lagna, or ascendant, is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. In Vedic thought it is not merely a starting point — it is the lens through which every planet and house is interpreted.
When we speak of "you" in a chart, we are often speaking of the Lagna lord and the Lagna itself. It colors personality, body, and the way the world meets you. A strong Lagna with benefic aspects gives resilience and clarity of path. A challenged one asks for remedies that strengthen the rising sign and its lord.
Notice how the same planetary placement reads differently depending on Lagna. Jupiter in the 5th house is not the same story for a Gemini Lagna as it is for a Scorpio Lagna. The houses shift their meaning; the yogas gain or lose dignity.
To know your Lagna well is to begin any serious work with the chart. It is the first breath of the sky meeting your body. Everything else unfolds from there.
